Deloitte & Touche LLP, on behalf of BT, initially carried out an analysis of the UK calls market in July 2003.

This analysis has now been refreshed and is again a very comprehensive study on the actual calling patterns of 1.1 million BT Business customers. This in turn is made up of over four billion individual calls and 695 billion minutes. It spans the spending patterns of customers from a few pounds per annum up to £1.6 million per annum.

Based on this, the average spend profile of a BT Business customer has been determined and this profile has been used to compare against key competitors.

The competitor tariffs used in the study were verified by an independent source, Teligen UK and is based on July 2004 data.

The analysis featured the following competitors:

MCI NTL
Colt Opal
CWC Your Communications
Energis Kingston
Eurocall Vartec
Daisy OneTel
Telewest Telco

The analysis found a call type breakdown as follows:

% by Duration Volume Spend
Local 23.38% 43.54% 27.20%
National 20.36% 26.57% 20.53%
NTS 18.54% 7.94% 19.51%
F2M 8.41% 15.43% 31.17%
IDD 1.82% 1.66% 4.79%
IDD Data
0.16% 0.10% 1.19%
DQ 0.00% 0.00% 0.00%
ISP 26.71% 3.48% 0.00%
Other 0.62% 1.29% 0.00%

This shows the growing significance of the fixed to mobile call type for BT Business customers. This came out as the highest spend call category for an average BT Business customer.

Since the July 2003 study, the proportion of calls to mobile has increased and there have been changes in the national and local call proportions.

Key Findings

Based on the average BT Business call profile, Deloitte’s found the following:

1. Fixed to Mobile

BT Business Plan’s recently launched fixed to mobile rates are significantly cheaper than all of the competitor rates analysed. This includes both the capped and uncapped offerings.

For example:

Against the average competitor, BT Business Plan’s capped option was up to 31.3% cheaper
Against the average competitor, BT Business Plan’s uncapped option was up to 25.6% cheaper

Opal was BT’s closest competitor in this call category
Significantly: Against Opal, BT Business Plan’s capped option was up to 21.5% cheaper
Against Opal, BT Business Plan’s uncapped option was up to 15% cheaper

The study also found that for an average BT Business customer, major competitors are more expensive than BT Business Plan.

A three minute call to a mobile with Opal was up to 8.5p more expensive than a BT Business Plan capped call

A 30 minute call to a mobile with Opal was up to £3.46 more expensive than a BT Business Plan capped call

By introducing BT Business Plan’s capped tariff fixed to mobile calls produce an average saving of up to 12% on overall BT call bills

By introducing BT Business Plan’s uncapped tariff fixed to mobile calls produce an average saving of up to 9% on overall BT call bills.

It is important to remember that over 60% of the time an average customer spends on the phone calling a mobile now effectively costs nothing with BT Business Plan (based on the capped fixed to mobile option).1

There are over 54 million mobiles in the UK2. BT Business Plan customers can now call the four major mobile networks for up to 01484 465160For further information please contact your BT Value Added Growth Reseller Of The Year an hour for only 30p.
